Since Summer Solstice is just around the corner, I figured I'd post an entry I wrote about Samhain (Halloween) back in the day...
My Very First High Holiday:
10/06
"I have a statue of a gargoyle that I purchased right before my first Sabbat. (John, the owner of the store talked me back into going.) He looks like a cross between a dog and a lion with angel wings. As I was wandering the aisles, he jumped out at me like, buy me! Take me home!
So I did, and the first name to come to my head was Tolstoy. Can't remember where I've heard the name, but oh well.
On to my first sabbat:
When I first got there, I was a little anxious, cuz the circle had been casted, and people were already calling their loved ones to dance.
Eventually I gathered the courage and came and sat down. I watched everyone as they lit candles; some people were dancing about the fire. The energies were somber and powerful. It was nothing short of literally, "magickal".
Then the music kicked up and everyone was dancing. I just clapped in time with the music, to clumsy and shy to try myself.
Then the quarters were closed, circle taken down, and people went to gather the food and put on their shoes n' stuff. As I was putting on my shoes, a lady sat next to me; she turned and looked at me. I did what John said: I stuck out my hand and said, "Hi! My name's Raye!"
She was really nice and took me under her wing. I met another guy; I swear I know him from somewhere. It was great fun. A little kid popped up and said, "Hi! What's your name?" He was pretty sweet. I was so happy that everyone was so friendly, open and warm.
The food was delicious--I need to find that recipe for that apple cake.
Sat and talked a lot. Made friends. Gonna do it all again.
I hope I can come for Yule!
Bought a bunch of books.
Need to study for micro now..."
D'aaawww. I was so cute! And excited!
I've kept the friends I made that day. Didn't make Yule that particular year, but I did the next. And it was AWESOME. I'm usually so busy and have tests around each holiday, but when I can make it to the celebrations I have so much fun. Things have changed--I've changed. I get up and dance with everyone, even total strangers and we laugh and just have such a grand old time.
Very refreshing.
I still haven't found the recipe for that cake, darnit, and that was two years ago.
And Tolstoy sits above my head, on my bed. Ever watchful. And I remember now that he used to be a writer from way back when. He often serves as my muse as well.
